by Dennis Potter
Loft Theatre Company, May 1993
Director: David Hankins
A tragic play but a very happy production. Seven adults playing
seven-year-olds in Dennis Potter’s typically astringent
demolition of the myth that childhood is a time of purity and
innocence. Left to right: Ros Wehner (Angela), Glynis Fletcher
(Audrey), me (Willie), Steve Cobert (Raymond), Tom O’Connor
(Peter) and Peter Ward (John).
Tom O’Connor and me. The scab on my knee is fake (ironic,
as all seven of us acquired more than enough genuine injuries during
the show). I also composed and recorded the incidental music score
for this production my first. Also a first was the set;
blending real woodland greenery with walls, ramps and platforms
painted in childlike primary colours, it was the first to be designed
by Tim Meacock, who subsequently left his job with Barclays Bank,
retrained and is now a leading designer in regional theatre.
